There is something deeply ironic about having a gun misfire and you end up shooting your own bullet proof vest. Even better when you are a state legislator.
Technically this is not a misfire, it's an unintentional discharge. They're very different things, just as there is a difference between having a brake failure and running a red light. Also, handguns don't have "clips" (the term is "magazine"), but the reporter obviously doesn't care about accuracy in his reporting.
The article didn't mention what model gun was involved, but either the gun was defective or Reid was inexcusably lax in his gun handling procedures. Modern guns simply do not "go off by accident" when releasing the magazine. This sort of thing should be cause for invalidating the carry permit and requiring the person to complete a rigorous retraining program before reapplying.
Democrats are not "too much wimps" to have carry permits; I'd get one except that in Maryland you pretty much have to need one for work or the State won't issue it. I could get one in Virginia (I already qualify) but spend relatively little time there.
