This may be a question I'm better off not having answered, but last night at dinner Pam was telling me about something she saw on TV, and at one point was saying "the guy was playing polo on a horse", at which point I said "as opposed to on a chihauhau?" and Pam just gave me The Look. Was my comment *that* smart alecky?

Yes, you are a smartmouth sometimes, but it's your nature so I'm not sure how one could judge a specific incident as being *that* much different or deserving of special, withering glare effort.

Depending on my mood, I would either greet that kind of comment with The Look, a comment of "no, on a camel" or possibly respond with "no, as opposed to in the water" if I was slow enough to miss the smart-aleckiness of your response.
