Well, the 2nd plumber was a lot more competent than the first, and charged less. He got the tub working, and didn't even need to cut a hole in any drywall. Although thanks to drakken if I have to cut through the drywall I now know where to cut.
He snaked it from the wall side, got a modest amount of ^&*$ out, then had me turn the water on. With the water on "hi" it drained out. He then reassembled the part we had taken off, and tested it a second time. This time nothing flowed at all. He did about 20 more minutes of snaking, this time it drained easily, and left me, having charged me $105. Pam took a bath last night and was very happy with how the tub drained.
