In spite of the email that says my job interview for the promotion was 3pm on Monday Dec 1st, I got a heads up from a co worker that the SES, the department head, and the division head were waiting for me. So I put on my suit, walked over to the main building, and engaged in the farce of a job interview when they've already appointed someone else as "acting" for the job.

I actually am trying to figure out three good reasons not to tell them to take the job and shove it. But with the economy being so sucky, and my field being so niche, do I really want to quit?

I've seen plenty of times where the 'acting' person did not get the job.

Either because they sucked, didn't want the job, or were getting ready to transition to somewhere else.

A lot of times, they don't want to have someone put in charge of those who were his/her peers- they promote him/her, but then put them in charge of a different group and get a new leader for his/her old group.

Just give it your best shot and know what ever happens, you were the stand up guy through out. Sometimes it pays off.

At least your co-worker was looking out for you.

Is it worth bringing this to OPM?

More to the point, is the possibility of revenge worth the possibility of never getting any work in your field in the U.S. again.

Good for the duckling! I managed to cover Best Co-Worker's back yesterday - I warned him that today was going to include a mandatory photo with the CEO.

Yes, you want to quit. No, you shouldn't. However, it's probably time to start interviewing. When you have an offer in hand, THEN you can tell them to shove it.
