So, for the past few months we've been not only been told we need to move to NMCI, but that our web pages, indeed, the entire usno.navy.mil address space would be going away, and we'd move to the Oceanographic Portal at CNMOC (our new overlords after the last reorg). This in spite of the fact we've told them clearly 1) a boat load of people get data from USNO, and trying to make a change on 1 Jan 09 is a really stupid idea, and 2) of the four organizations that make up CNMOC, USNO has 99% of the data that would go into the new "Web Portal", so why are we taking down our web pages and moving them to some other system?

The pointy haired bosses noticed that if they redefine USNO as being US Navy Oceanographer rather than US Naval Observatory then we can simply be given the task to deploy the portal and make it work ourselves.

So we lose our identity, have to find the money for the servers and bring up this new portal in three weeks, in spite of the fact our IT department was severely overloaded BEFORE this all happened?

Can someone just shoot us now?

The one silver lining is that by some miracle *I* wasn't tasked to be on the committee dealing with this cluster fuck.

I would have hated to be the person who had to answer the phone on Jan 1 to reply to phone calls on the subject of "why can't I sync my computer to the master clock" if usno.navy.mil went away. I'd hate to think how many hardware gizmo's have that dns entry built into them.

Wow. That's just ... wow.

Not sure I've seen such a cluster of clusterfucks all clustered up and fucked like that before.
