me: I don't know that off the top of my head, let me get your phone number, and I'll call my wife, and then get back to you.
voice: Hmm, why don't I save you a phone call, and look it up. *pause* It's xxx-xx-xxxx.
me: err, thank you, is there anything else you need?
voice: No, have a nice day.
me: hangs up phone, then bangs head against wall

Not to mention the whole bit where giving your (or your spouse's) SSN over the phone to someone who called *you* (unless you know them by voice) is just a bad idea.
