A bad alternator won't prevent a car from starting. It will, however, cause the battery to go dead over time which has much the same effect.
The usual thing that fails in an alternator are the diodes, and they're often trivially easy to replace yourself.
My cat usually wakes up at about 5am wanting to be fed. Going to bed earlier doesn't help, as this means his last feeding is earlier too, causing him to wake up earlier as well. So no sympathies on the dog from me. I guess I'll have to vote "car" as well.
