Apparently Sarah Palin was using non work supplied computers to do work related activity while in office in Alaska. A boat load of people filed Freedom of Information requests for those email. Apparently you have to fly to Alaska to pick up a hard copy, since it isn't feasible to convert the email into electronic form.

Om, what? Want to run that one buy me again please?

They are too dumb to install Adobe 9 Pro on the system where the emails were generated I guess because with that its just a couple of clicks and presto a nice digital pdf (legal document form per the federal gov't btw) portfolio.

Ah yes ... legal run around for the "we're not gonna make it easy to see the dumb"...

The claim was that they didn't know how to securely redact the documents electronically, so they did it on paper.

While there may be something to that, I'm sure there's also the "this will make it harder to search" argument.

I hadn't seen that one, but considering how many screw ups there have been trying to redact stuff, that may actually be true.

I think its acutally them trying to be a pain in the butt.

I'm all but sure that's the reason, although the redaction is, I'm sure, part of it.

Not really that long ago

but forever in Internet time, I applied for a job. I emailed them my resume. I got a response saying that could I please re-submit my resume using a fixed-width font because their OCR system couldn't handle my resume.

That is to say, someone printed out a crappy paper copy of my emailed resume in order to hand it to someone else whose job it was to OCR submitted resumes into their system.

Somewhere I still have, I hope, a copy of the blistering letter I sent them in response asking, among other things, why I would ever want to work for so stupid an organization.
