I think I just dodged a bullet in that I caught a pipe in the kitchen about to burst, and got the main cuttoff turned off in time. Where in time means 'only about a quart of water is pooled in the cabinet', instead of having a gush of about a quart every few seconds.

I think of pipes bursting as being a gradual process. How did you happen to notice that an explosion was imminent?

I was making a sandwich, and heard a hissing noise. I first thought it was the stove, but that wasn't it. I then checked the sink, and there was a fine mist starting to make a mess under my sink. I started hunting for a cutoff valve, and wasn't finding one when the noise became *much* louder, water started pouring from the cabinet, and I raced to the main cutoff valve fast as I can.

Of course, now one would like to have a plumber look at other pipes of similar age and subject to similar stresses. My sympathies.
