I survived the opening of the (not brave enough to acutally take them) HOT lanes on my 495 commute. Apparently there have been five accidents at one entrance since Saturday.
I wasn't brave enough. The advertised price was 75 cents from I66 to "495", which is where they ended, and the traffic wasn't heavy enough for me to be tempted. Tomorrow I have a meeting, so I may brn 75 cents on my speedpass to give it a whirl.
I saw then when driving down to dinner in VA on Friday night. I can understand the driver's panic- there were a LOT of overhead signs and it wasn't at all clear which lane was going where. I hear the accidents are mostly cases of drivers realizing they were in the wrong lane a moment too late to make an easy correction, and they made a bad one instead. Too many things going on at once.
Yea, WAMU was advising that if people find they are in the wrong lane, just continue, and you just have to pay the toll, there is no violation. However, during morning rush hour people aren't endowed with extra brainpower.
Yeah, I accidentally got stuck without cash on the Greenway once, and they just took a photo of my plate and mailed me a bill for the cost of the toll. If you pay it on time, there's no penalty. They really, really don't advertise that very well though.
