A branch of statistics based a theorem of Thomas Bayes, a 19th centuary theologian, where you assign prior probabilities to all uknown hypothesis, use probability theory to calcute the posterios probabilities, given your observed data.
ime it's not the formulas of Bayes that are the problem, particularly if you're used to physics. the real dull drudgery is calculating all the prior probabilities to feed into the formulae. if someone's going to give you the data then you're good to go.
