I saw on the news as I was eating lunch that 23rd street was on fire. Not some buildings on 23rd street, but the street itself. Seems there is a gas leak, and the asphalt is on fire. Looks like Dante's Inferno.

I used to live at 23rd and I, when I was a college student.

Wow. I can just imagine what a huge mess that is, and what the students in the dorms over there are feeling.

  • I want to see pictures.
  • No, this is not nearly as shocking as when the Monongahela (sp?) river caught fire.
  • No, a street on fire is not Dante's Inferno. A mountain on fire is Inferno. A subdivision on fire is Inferno. A forest fire stretching across your entire horizon is Inferno. A street on fire is just a toaster oven compared to that. (Yes, I'll be posting pictures eventually.)
  • I'm not trying to downplay what must be a truly horrifying scene... but I watched an unstoppable Class 6 firestorm eat the edge of a city 6 weeks ago and you triggered a flashback.

And I still want to see pictures of 23rd street on fire. Next stop, washingtonpost.com ...
