So Pam and I take the mother in law to a baseball game every year. This year the MIL wanted to see the Yankees in July. We had to buy tickets in pairs, so that leaves one ticket. Pam and I were trying to figure out who might enjoy the ticket, and we came up wth CTan. but we figured the odds of her being in the dc area was low. So I sent her email, and she's going to be at at conference in silver spring that weekend. I figure it's fate.

If you want to see Venus, find the moon, and then look about four moon diameters "down" and to the "left", and that point that seems like a plane, but isn't moving, is Venus.

On May 20th there will be an annular eclipse, visible in the western part of the country. Looking at the path of the eclipse, I notice that Albuquerque is very near the center line. I'm thinking that a weekend visit, and a hike to Sandia Peak to watch the eclipse, then dinner at the restaurant at the top to watch the sunset is a nifty idea. Anyone one else think it is a nifty idea?

From the Bujold mailing list:

o, not that kind....

The date for the publication of _Captain Vorpatril's Alliance_ has been set by Baen as November 6th, 2012.

Note that, this far out, there can still be alterations due to unforeseen circumstances -- _CryoBurn_'s eventual pub date was advanced by a couple of weeks, for example, due to some last-minute publication timing issues -- but this should not be too far out of final alignment.

So far in the past 24 hours I've realized that I don't know where my passport is, where my wife's passport is, or where my wolftrap tickets for Pirates of Penzance are.

quiet

I love how quiet and peaceful is when the snow is coming down. Or at least untill Montoya notices I'm standing in the yard and starts a bark fest.

I hate it when I return from being away and found out that my DVR didn't sucessfully record the show I wanted, i.e., the Dr. Who Christmas Special. Does anyone have a copy on DVD?

plumbing

I got a plumber into my house for free. And I got him out of my house for only $285. I'll call this one 'lucking out'.

I think I just dodged a bullet in that I caught a pipe in the kitchen about to burst, and got the main cuttoff turned off in time. Where in time means 'only about a quart of water is pooled in the cabinet', instead of having a gush of about a quart every few seconds.

My workday commute has been adversely affected for well over a year due to the construction of HOT lanes on 495, construction has slowed traffic from I66 onto I495. Saturday the new "flyover" lane opened, and instead of one lane of traffic, the new flyover allows two lanes of traffic, which might speed things up. So, today on my first attempt of using the new bridge, with a hope of a perhaps shorter wait, traffic was all backed up, due to an accident on the new flyover lane. *sigh*

Jon Huntsman was the one one conservative I thought wasn't actually brain dead, he had said earlier “To be clear, I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy.”

However, in order to curry favor with the Tea Party crowd, he's now changed his mind and become a global warming skeptic.

I'll give the tea party a molecule of respect once it stops requiring its members to self lombotomize.

This is my political grump for the day.

What Swedish chef, Animal, and Beaker can do to a rendition of "Danny Boy" can bring tears to the eye.

As the budgets wind their way through congress really, really late, I noticed
the following two lines back to back,

1) a decision NOT to allow for $322 million dollars for NOAO to fund a climate service center,
2) a decision to fund $2.3 billion dollars of disaster funding for flooding and hurricanes, which are noted to be at "historically high levels".

Some things I can't even bother to raise a good snark over.

Having your boss ask you for a updated resume so he can pass it around the other department heads in an effort to find some other department that has need of my skills.

Dear member of my wife's family, please let me give you a bit of advice. If you ever hear the phrase "I know this will make me sound like a bigot . . ." come out of your mouth, please stop talking. Because you are correct, it does make you sound like a bigot. Of course I figured that out a few years ago when you referred to a pro football player by using the N word.
